What is 2-1-1?

2-1-1 provides information & referral for people in need of health & human service resources, as well as volunteer opportunities in our community.

When you call, you will be connected to an information & referral specialist who is highly trained to evaluate each individual situation, access our extensive database, and provide information on appropriate resources. Calls are confidential and service is available in Spanish.

2-1-1 History and Background

Background

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has ruled that the telephone number 2-1-1 be designated nationwide as the number to call for access to non-emergency information on health, human services, and volunteering needs. More than 234 million Americans have access to 2-1-1.

Rationale

There are thousands of phone numbers for health and social service programs, government offices, community/faith-based organizations, volunteer referral programs, donation clearinghouses, educational systems and neighborhood groups. This service provides a way for people to simply dial 2-1-1 and talk to an information specialist with access to accurate information.

Additional Benefits

2-1-1 is able to take non-emergency/non-life-threatening calls, thereby freeing up 9-1-1 capacity

Timely and appropriate access to services - the ultimate one-stop shop service for referral to services or volunteer opportunities

Identification of trends and gaps in community services by reviewing callers' needs (All calls are confidential, however, tracking of issues is necessary to meet national 2-1-1 accreditation standards.)

2-1-1 conveys specific information and special announcements to the public during times of natural or man-made disasters
